The International Convention (ICON) is one of the biggest events of the Key Club year, and you can celebrate the amazing things Key Club does with more than 1,600 Key Clubbers from across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. For starters, traveling to and from the International Convention can be a great way to get to know and create lifelong bonds between the people from your district. At the convention, you can share innovative service project and fundraising ideas, listen to amazing speakers, train for your leadership position, and elect next year's International Board. From discovering new charities and organizations you and your club can team up with, to having fun and making memories and friendships that last a lifetime, the Key Club International Convention is the place to be!
Before ICON, the Kansas District typically holds a district tour at or around the designated location. The Kansas District also normally holds a collaborative tour along with other Key Club districts. While fostering friendships on the tour, members from the Kansas District can take part in fun attractions and activities!
Key Club International does a good job of making sure the annual conventions are at different locations. Some of the most recent locations include Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, and Baltimore!
We’ve had as many as eight from the same school. Every school is entitled to two delegates. Two same-gender students from the same school can room together. Even so, there are schools that send just one member.
Not a problem! By Saturday afternoon everyone will have been introduced and you’ll know your roommates. Typically, everyone has a “permanent” roommate, but roommate pairings will rotate at the convention. Everyone is welcome and treated as a valued member of the group!
The Kansas District has a group of male and female faculty advisors and Kiwanians who have been on prior tours and are accustomed to traveling with students. All adults attending the convention must pass a background check.
The emphasis is on variety. Every attempt is made to strike a balance between indoor and outdoor activities, blending cultural and educational choices with entertainment and physical activities. Simply put, if it isn’t going to be fun and rewarding, we probably won’t do it.
Fees are typically $1,000 to $1,100, which includes transportation, lodging, at least seventeen meals, the convention registration, admission to the selected attractions, pins, and side trips. Spending money for snacks, gifts, souvenirs, personal items and, for some, clothes, depends on your shopping habits. Most Key Clubbers spend in the $125 -$200 range, although several spend less and a few spend more.
Your Key Club and local Kiwanis Club will typically pay one-third of the total cost each, like with district convention. That leaves the final third for members to pay. Even though that may still seem overwhelming, there are other methods members can use to cover the leftover cost.
Think about setting up a Kiwanis Gives Online account. On your fundraising page, mention what you are fundraising for and why others should donate. Promote the page to relatives and friends, along with Kiwanians.
One very effective method that has worked for ICON fundraising in the past is acquiring sponsorships. Local businesses often sponsor a portion of the cost for school trips, including Key Club's conventions. There are certain steps you can follow to increase your chances of gaining support from local businesses. The official sponsorship toolkit provided by Key Club International can be found below.
